How to Design an Effective Remote Learning Environment
Whether you’re a parent to a school-aged child or earning your way to a degree, we know learning is going to be different this coming school year; and therefore, accommodating the correct tools to effectively learn is important. The environment that is set up for those to learn at school or for those working in the office, provides us with the proper workspace and connections to gain progress. Here, as an expert in interior design, are effective ways to create a work environment or remote learning space while at home.

1. Have a Functional Desk
A desk or work space is an important asset in order to create “routine” on a daily basis. This helps add structure through the day, and gives kids an established learning zone in your home so they will refer to this spot as the learning zone.
A functional desk can be anything from a study room desk, kitchen counter as a work surface, or propping up a table. It’s important to note, for kids ten and under they will need access to help; and therefore, should work on the same floor or near parents and older children.
Depending on how you work and your kids learn, here are a few work surface options:
- Lots of paperwork – enclosed desk or access to enclosed storage (storage on casters would be helpful when kids shift working areas due to school tasks.)
- Only a laptop – writing desk, table, kitchen counter are great options.
- Active Worker – sit to stand desk. This a healthy alternative for you working from home and/or a remote learner as a reminder to move throughout the day.
- Limited Space – wall mounted or folding desk. An easy to disassemble desk gives a convenient place to work during the day, and space when school or work is done for the time being.

2. Use Comfortable Seating
A comfortable seat is important when working and learning for long hours. Padded seats are highly recommended to give your body proper position when in session. If space does allow, consider providing an alternative seating option for a change of scenery. This could be a quiet corner with a nice view and a floor cushion.
3. Get Practical Storage and an Organization System
Storage provides you with a healthier work space that gives you the motivation you need day in and day out. Clutter and being disorganized, not only sets you back from accomplishing work, but causes a negative energy and mood. Give yourself organization options such as a box, file cabinet on caster, a small file cabinet, or built-in desk storage with folder dividers.
4. Use Shelving with Bins for Kids
It’s easier for you and a learning point for the kids to provide access to a simple storage solution. Shelves with bins that can be taken out allows for a clean-up routine when done for the day. Having a prepared bins of school supplies minimizes frustration during the child’s school day, and relieves friction between siblings. Think Marie Kondo during this process of organization, invest in the tools that will help one learn effectively.

Pro-tips
Here is a recommended list of tools that will help remote learning be easier:
- Magnetic Chalkboard or Dry-erase Board : This tool helps with visualization, and helps promote kids to plan ahead and complete assignments.
- Clear Container : To help keep children organized when transitioning schoolwork space into another activity. A clear container can hold their go-to school tools, and gives them a clear sense of what is inside.
- Good Lighting : Lighting is a necessity for kids to keep focused and protect their eyes. Layering different types of lights, such as natural daylight (window) and artificial light (task lamp) is important during the different times of day.
